Premier League News: West Ham have made an offer to Jesse Lingard’s representatives to sign the player on a free transfer.
The midfielder was officially a free agent on July 1 following the expiration of his contract at Manchester United.
Lingard had a successful loan spell at West Ham in the second half of the 2020/21 season as he scored nine goals in 16 Premier League games, while Newcastle looked to sign Lingard in the January transfer window.
Former United caretaker manager Ralf Rangnick brushed off criticism in May from brother Lingard after he failed to give the midfielder an Old Trafford farewell against Brentford.
Gary Neville believes the player does not deserve special treatment after he watched United’s two favorites, Bryan Robson and Steve Bruce, get nothing.
Speaking on The Gary Neville Podcast, he said: “Bullshit about Jesse, look, Jesse has been at the club for a long time, doing a great job but I saw Bryan Robson and Steve Bruce not playing in their last game and not getting a farewell in the final. Trophy.
“One was probably the greatest captain Manchester United ever had and the other was one of the greatest and they didn’t get that, farewell to the fans. I’m not sure why Jesse deserved it.”
David Moyes is looking to improve his squad ahead of a season that will see West Ham combine Premier League competition with involvement in their first European Conference League.
The club are also continuing to work on securing a deal for PSG goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, who was loaned out to the Hammers last season.
