Premier League News: FC Mainz sporting director Christian Heidel has criticized Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly for choosing to sack Thomas Tuchel from the coach a few days ago.
Thomas Tuchel was sacked by the Blues due to a string of poor results they received at the start of the 2022/23 season. The dismissal came just after the defeat on the first matchday of the Champions League group stage against Dinamo Zagreb. Thus, the 49-year-old coach was sacked after assisting the team in just seven games this season, with six in the Premier League and one in the Champions League.
“The sacking is at the heart of those who oppose investors in football. It’s purely an investor’s decision,” Heidel told Bild.
Christian Heidel does have a close relationship with Tuchel. He had hired Tuchel as coach of FC Mainz in 2009.
“Someone who doesn’t know about football might think that sixth place (in the Premier League) isn’t good enough for him and say: ‘Then let’s try another coach.’ After only six games, I can’t think of any other reason. But Chelsea will deeply regret this decision, they won’t get a better coach in such a short time.”
Now, the Blues have appointed former Brighton & Hove Albion coach Graham Potter as Tuchel’s replacement coach.
