Tennis News: US tennis player Taylor Fritz is so close to claiming the biggest win of his career to date at Wimbledon in 2022 against Rafael Nadal.
But instead of qualifying for the semifinals of a first Grand Slam of his career, the American lost to a player who has won 22 Grand Slam titles in the fifth set tiebreak and left the court quite sad.
“It was a tough match. I think I did some things well and some things not so well. In the end, he was just really good at it,” admits Fritz.
“In certain parts of the match, I felt maybe I should have done better. I gave him a lot of chances and he took them. It was an impressive match. To be honest, maybe that loss was more painful than any other loss I’ve had.”
The 24-year-old showed his disappointment as he walked to the net to shake hands with Spaniard Nadal and sat for a moment on his bench before leaving the court.
“After the game was over I sat there and I felt like crying, like I wanted to cry. I’ve never felt that way before after a defeat. I’ve never felt I could cry after a game. That suffices to say that defeat hurts more compared to other painful defeats,” added Fritz.
The good news for the 11th seed is that he was able to corner Nadal, who has twice won Wimbledon, to the best of his ability. Even though he was unable to tackle the second seed in the end, he proved that he could challenge the best on the biggest stage.
“I made it to my first quarter-final. I’m going in the right direction,” said Fritz. “I do not know. I will see my performance and how I feel playing and the draw of my matches. It’s a great achievement, I feel really happy.”
“I really wanted this match. So it’s a tough loss, but now I’m going to look at the positives from this game because I really wanted to.”
Earlier this season, the American beat Nadal in the final of the BNP Paribas Open, Indian Wells. He carried that confidence when they met at Wimbledon, but he was unable to repeat that result.
