Simona Halep beats Karolina Muchova at Wimbledon –

Tennis News: The last time she played a match at Wimbledon, Simona Halep came off the court with the Venus Rosewater Dish trophy, the women’s singles Wimbledon title.

The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and injuries in 2021 prevented the Romanian from returning to Wimbledon as reigning champion, but he returned to action decisively when he kicked off the 2022 edition.

In a challenging first round match against Czech Karolina Muchova, the 16th seed faced no break points and broke Muchova four times before winning 6-3, 6-2 in just 65 minutes.

The former world number 1 has shown no sign of the neck injury that saw him withdraw from the Bad Homburg Open and send Bianca Andreescu through to the semifinals. In the first round of Wimbledon, he hit 16 winners and made only nine unforced errors. In fact, he only lost nine points from his eight service games.

Although he had never faced Muchova before, the Romanian stated that he did not underestimate the ability of the Czech tennis player.

“I have great memories from the 2019 season. It’s always a pleasure to be back here, to Wimbedon,” Halep exclaimed. “I was quite emotional before this game, but now I want to enjoy it. I really feel good about it.”

“I have struggled a lot in the last few seasons. Lots of injuries, no confidence, all the things that happen in this world. Now, I love tennis again. I’m very happy to be on the pitch and I love to train.”

Halep will next meet Belgian Kirsten Flipkens after the 36-year-old beat Australian Jaimee Fourlis 7-5, 6-2. The Romanian have not lost a set in their previous five meetings.

Meanwhile, after losing the opening match at Eastbourne International last week, the Spaniard, Paula Badosa, only needed 56 minutes to beat the US tennis player, Louisa Chirico with a landslide result 6-2, 6-1.

Fourth seed Badosa broke Chirico’s serve five times and made fewer unforced errors. After the match, he revealed to reporters that he was pleased with the ability to adapt to the windy conditions.
