Tennis News: At a press conference prior to the 2022 Wimbledon season, Serena Williams stated that she needed time away from tennis to recover, both physically and mentally.
The American is eyeing an eighth Wimbledon title of her career after she made the surprise announcement two weeks ago that she will be returning to action at a third Grand Slam of the 2022 season.
The 40-year-old retired due to injury against Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the first round of Wimbledon last season and at a press conference before this season’s Grand Slam in London, made it clear that he was not retiring.
“I’m not retiring,” said Williams. “I just have to recover physically and mentally.”
The 23-year-old Grand Slam champion also added that he had no specific plans to return to action at Wimbledon, but that the time had come to coincide with the Grand Slam event.
After confirming that the former world number 1 will use a wild card to appear in London this season, he returned to court with Tunisian Ons Jabeur for the Eastbourne International doubles last week. But the collaboration did not last long after the semifinals, the 2022 Madrid Open champion, Jabeur suffered an injury.
“Honestly, I have no plans,” admits Williams. “I just don’t know when I’ll be back, how I’ll be back. Wimbledon is an amazing place and it all came at the right time.”
The tennis player, who has one daughter, also supports the Spaniard, Rafael Nadal, who is heading to London to recover from a chronic leg injury.
“He did a lot in 2022,” Williams commented about Nadal winning the Australian Open and French Open this season.
“He’s quite busy. I’ve always been a fan of Rafa. I named my dog after his name. He is very sweet. I always support Rafa. He’s really inspired with everything he’s done this season and he has so much more to do.”
Williams will start her Grand Slam in London against France’s Harmony Tan on Monday (27/6), while Nadal will meet Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo on Tuesday (28/6).
