Spanish League News: Former Uruguayan National Team midfielder, Gus Poyet greatly admires Luka Modric. According to him, the Real Madrid midfielder is one of the best players he has ever coached.
Poyet previously enjoyed spells in charge of teams in France, China, Spain, Greece and England after retiring as a player in 2006.
Despite a nomadic career in coaching, Poyet has been unquestionably the No.1 player for the last 16 years, with veteran Modric receiving more accolades on the back of stellar seasons.
“I had very good players as the main coach, but over the years as an assistant, Modric was the best (at Tottenham),” he said, according to a report from Diario AS.
“The way he sees football is incredible, he makes things easy. The way he can stop and accelerate while playing, how he hits the ball in any way…. every day.”
“Every year we say it will be his last. But, Luka came out and said – ‘No, the others’. It’s not over because he has a special gift,” he added.
Gus Poyet helped deliver Tottenham’s last trophy, a League Cup triumph in 2008, with the likes of Modric and Dimitar Berbatov at his side. Another famous name he met there was Gareth Bale being attacked.
Meanwhile, at the age of 36, Modric continues to show extraordinary performances with Real Madrid. Most recently, the Croatian midfielder won the Champions League title for the fifth time.
