Matthew Ebden And Max Purcell Rise Up Podium At Wimbledon

[ad_1] –

Tennis News: Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell must go through five sets for the fifth time before claiming the Wimbledon doubles title for the first time.

The Australian duo, who secured eight match point opportunities over two games en route to a Grand Slam final in London 2022, came back from falling behind with break opportunities in the fifth set against Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic before snatching a 7-6 6-7 victory. 4-6, 6-4, 7-6.

“People say that as kids, they dreamed of winning Wimbledon. I don’t know if I did it,” said 34-year-old Ebden.

“I want to be a professional tennis player, I want to be in the top 10. I started to believe in the last few seasons that we could win a Grand Slam and I could do it. But you never know when it will eventually happen.”

“Putting ourselves down on our backs and knowing we won Wimbledon. I told Max he was only 24 years old and won a Grand Slam in London. I was like, ‘If life is over, then I’m done. I feel amazing’.”

Pavic, who plays with his left hand due to a fracture in his right wrist, presented a fierce fight with Mektic. But the second pair ended up losing their bid to defend their Grand Slam title in London.

“A really tight fifth set. I have to congratulate them for this title. They had an amazing tournament, they bounced back on many occasions. They saved some match points and once again they came back from 1-2 (sets) with their good level,” said Mektic.

The win was even sweeter for Ebden and Purcell after they lost in the Australian Open final. On their way to winning the title in London, they claimed five games in five sets, two tiebreaks in the fifth, securing a match point chance in the first half and another five in the semifinals. In all six games, they have had to come back after trailing by two sets on two occasions.

The Wimbledon title is their second title of the 2022 season after they also won the title in Houston.

“We believe we are the best couple in the world,” Ebden exclaimed. “I will say it. I don’t think you can win Wimbledon without believing in it. We believe we are the best pair in the world after the US Open last season.”
