NBA Basketball News: James Harden makes a shocking decision. He reportedly decided to refuse to stay with the Philadelphia 76ers.
According to a report from Sharms Charnia of The Athletic, James Harden decided to refuse to accept the offer of 47.4 million dollars and opted for a free contract.
As previously reported, after Harden’s disappointing playoff performances, the 76ers will reportedly not be offering him a maximum contract.
Harden is reportedly open to taking a discount to help Philadelphia. Wizards guard Bradley Beal, who also recently opted out, is a rumored target. But Beal looks set to re-sign with Washington.
To make more sense, Harden would take a much smaller pay cut that would allow the 76ers to use a non-taxpayer mid-tier exemption — perhaps on PJ Tucker. If it crosses the line, Philadelphia can only use the mid-level taxpayer exemption, which may not be enough to lure Tucker from the Heat or other applicants.
That’s likely why reports of Harden stepping in and signing an extension never made sense. With his subsequent deal being sub-maxed, Harden could take a pay cut next season – when it helps the 76ers the most – and still earn the same total compensation for the duration of the deal.
Harden also fulfilled his wish to become a free agent for the first time in his career.
All signs point to him returning to Philadelphia. But with Harden – who has proven unstable – unencumbered by a contract, everything is open to him at unrestricted free agency.
