Finishing P5 in British GP, Fernando Alonso: Great Result for Alpine –

F1 News: Fernando Alonso considers a fifth place finish at the British GP to be Alpine’s best race of the year, and he even had his eye on the podium when he saw the four cars in front of him engage in a fierce battle ahead of the last few laps.

Starting the race from P7, Fernando Alonso managed to climb to fifth position during the race after successfully taking the opportunity to enter the pits during the Safety Car. In fifth place he then found himself witnessing a fierce battle by the four drivers in front of him, namely Carlos Sainz, Charles Leclerc, Lewis Hamilton and Sergio Perez. He admitted that he was ready to pounce if any of them made a mistake.

“That’s close. When I saw them fighting that fiercely and almost touching each other, I said: ‘okay, if they touch, two cars come out, and that’s enough for me to get on the podium’,” Alonso told Sky Sports.

But they fought really hard, so it was also fun to watch it from behind. And then, yes, I think P5 is a great result for us, although I did think it would be a P4 because I saw Charles move 10 straights in defending against Lewis. I did it in Canada and I got a five second penalty, so these three moves I don’t think are allowed. So yes, P4 will taste better,” he continued.

Thanks to Alonso’s achievement, Alpine was able to cut the distance with McLaren to six points in the race for P4 in the constructors’ standings.
