Badminton News : Fazriq Razif trains with seniors in a bid to end Malaysia’s 11-year wait for gold in men’s doubles at the World Junior Championships.
Fazriq Razif, who was recently promoted to the senior team under the guidance of national doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky, is looking for a partner in the men’s doubles at the upcoming October 17-30 world juniors meeting in Santander, Spain.
Son of former doubles legend Razif Sidek says improving quality is a real challenge
“I have been training with the seniors under Rexy since last Monday. The training is tough but I’m ready to push myself to be a better player. I also hope that this session will help me in the junior world,” said Fazriq.
“This will be my first and last world junior meeting and I really hope to win gold,” he added.
Malaysia last tasted success in men’s doubles in 2011 through Nelson Heg/Teo Ee Yi.
In fact, except for the achievements of gold medalist Goh Jin Wei in women’s singles in 2015 and 2018, Malaysia has not been able to produce medalists since Nelson/Ee Yi triumphed.
Even though Fazriq Razif has won the U-21 national title with Wong Vin Sean, he admits that he still has doubts about his partner for the world junior match.
“The coach decides who I will play with. I am ready to fight hard for gold, regardless of who my partner is,” said the 18-year-old.
Before leaving for Spain, the youngster will compete in the Malaysia Games (Sukma) on 29 September-8 October in Kuala Lumpur.
“I feel Sukma will be a good warm-up for me ahead of the World Junior Championships and hope to produce my best badminton there,” he added.
