Badminton News : Aaron Chia / Soh Wooi Yik, Malaysia’s men’s doubles number one, made history in their careers after becoming world champions after defeating Mohammad Ahsan / Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia at the 2022 World Championships. Obviously, their hard work has paid off. but surely there is much more to come.

Aaron Chia joined the national team in 2015. Chia was born in Batu Berendam, Malaysia on February 24, 1997. His interest in badminton started when he was just 4 years old, where he used to follow his father to the badminton court. At the age of 14, he enrolled at the Bukit Jalil Sports School (SSBJ) where he began to diligently train badminton.

On the other hand, his badminton partner Soh Wooi Yik was born on February 17, 1998. It is true what many people say, the fruit doesn’t fall far from the tree. Soh Wooi Yik is the son of Soh Goon Chup, a former Malaysian badminton player. Just like Chia, Soh started growing interest in badminton when she was just 4 years old. He represented Kuala Lumpur at the age of seven. He was also enrolled at the Bukit Jalil Sports School (SSBJ) at the age of 13.

The 2016 World Junior Championships was the first tournament when they were paired together. Since Chia and Soh became badminton partners, they were able to win different titles over the years. In 2019, they were All England Open finalists and Southeast Asian Games gold medalists. In fact, 2019 was also the first year they won a gold medal at the 2019 SEA Games which was held in the Philippines.

Then, In 2020, Chia and Soh won a bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. This was Chia and Soh’s first olympic match. Even though this was their first olympic match, they made sure that they delivered a great match. Then, after being beaten by Marcus Fernaldi Gideon of Indonesia and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo for more than eight times, Chia and Yik achieved a historic victory.

Currently, Aaron Chia and Soh are ranked 5th in the world. They both received the Regional Crown Knight Star award from the Malaysian government as an appreciation for making the nation proud for their achievements. We look forward to seeing these two amazing players in the upcoming tournaments!
