Geography



The island of Sri Lanka is 65,000 km2 in size, and is located in the Indian Ocean, 35 km south east of India. The island features a wide variety of different types of landscape. There are the swampy region on the west and east coasts, dry savannahs in the north, salt lakes and grasslands in the south east and the mountainous region in the centre with the island's tallest mountain, the 2,524-metre-high Pidurutalagala.
